High variability in cross-shore thermally driven exchange

چکیده
The variability of cross-shore thermally driven exchange was examined using ensemble-averages of observations from the Kilo Nalu Observatory on the south shore of Oahu Hawaii. The crossshore vertical shear, δVz, top-bottom temperature difference, ∆Tz, and cross-shore advective heat flux, Qex, were analyzed to evaluate the influence of the surface heat flux, the cross-shore wind and the M2 tide in the cross-shore exchange variability. The M2 affects the exchange through the effects of tidally driven alongshore flow on turbulent diffusivity and on Coriolis driven cross-shore accelerations. Lunar phase ensemble-averages are compared with a theoretical model to show that the interaction of the diurnal wind pattern and the tidally driven alongshore flow can lead to significant cross-shore exchange variability at sub-diurnal time scales.

Numerical Modeling of Onshore Plankton Transport
Cross-shore exchange of plankton plays an important role in marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Larvae of many intertidal invertebrate species grow offshore and come back to the shore for settlement by crossing the energetic surf zone; however, shoreward transport mechanisms are not well understood. To test the possible onshore transport mechanisms, numerical simulations were performed b...
متن کاملThermally Driven Exchanges between a Coral Reef and the Adjoining Ocean
In this paper hydrographic observations made over a fringing coral reef at the northern end of the Gulf of Aqaba near Eilat, Israel, are discussed. These data show exchange flows driven by the onshore–offshore temperature gradients that develop because shallow regions near shore experience larger temperature changes than do deeper regions offshore when subjected to the same rate of heating or c...
متن کاملImpact of atmospheric coastal jet off central Chile on sea surface temperature from satellite observations (2000-2007)
[1] The coast of central Chile is characterized by intermittent low-level along-shore southerly wind periods, called coastal jets (CJs). In this study, we take advantage of long-term satellite data to document the CJs characteristics over 2000–2007 and investigate its impact on upwelling. The CJ structure has a core some 100 km from the shore and a cross-shore scale of 160 km, and it usually la...
متن کاملAssessment of spatial variability of cation exchange capacity with kriging and cokriging
Cation exchange capacity (CEC) is one of the most important soil attributes which control some basic properties of soil such as acidity, water and nutrient retaining capacity. However, the measurement of cation exchange capacity in large areas is time consuming and requires high expenses. One way to save time and expenses is to use simple soil covariates and geostatistical methods in mapping CE...
متن کاملSandbar Migration Due to Cross-Shore Sediment Transport; A Case Study of Noshahr Coasts, Iran
Cross-shore sediment transport is one of the effective factors in erosion and sedimentation, and affects dynamics of the beach profile in coastal areas. Furthermore, sandbar migration due to cross-shore sediment transport mostly effects beach nourishment, displacement of pollutions trapped in sediments, and organism and plants’ lives. In this manuscript, sandbar migration due to cro...
